IMCO ad hoc delegation to Seoul, South Korea
From 31 October to 4 November 2022, an ad hoc delegation of six IMCO Members visited Seoul, South Korea, to gather information on the Digital Single Market. The delegation was organised in the context of substantial legislative work carried out by IMCO in the light of the emerging digital technologies such as, the Digital Services Act, Digital Markets Act, Artificial Intelligence Act, and safety of consumer products.
Two developments impacted the delegation's visit :
- The 30 October Itaewon tragedy, which was followed by a week-long national mourning. The whole delegation was very touched to hear about the tragedy, payed their respects, and expressed condolences to their Korean counterparts.
- The firing of missiles by North Korea into the international waters of the East Sea, close to South Korea's eastern coast.
Notwithstanding, this visit provided an excellent opportunity for an exchange between Members and government officials, as well as major South Korean companies on South Korea's achievements in the digital sphere, the challenges faced, as well as on the two sides' legislation on the digital domain.
