Motion for a European Parliament resolution on stricter regulation of energy companies in the EU
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Article 4(2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,
– having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas the importance of energy can be compared to that of air, as all areas of human life are connected to energy: home heating, accessing information, transport, healthcare, not to mention its crucial importance for business, among other things;
B. whereas energy supply is easily monopolised;
C. whereas rising energy prices have deprived some people of their livelihoods and increased the profits of energy companies;
D. whereas, in this situation, the EU should strictly regulate the profits of energy-related companies and prevent them from exceeding 15-20%;
E. whereas it is socially unjust that green energy was subsidised with taxpayers’ money at a time when prices were low, but is now allowed to be traded at any price;
1. Calls on the European Commission to draft a regulation under which the activities of energy companies would be strictly regulated and the profits of energy companies would not be allowed to exceed 15-20%.
